Bar stools and counter stools look alike, but they are made for different heights. Choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake people make when shopping for kitchen island stools. Here is how to get it right the first time. Browse our bar and counter stools.
Measure Your Counter
Measure from the floor to the top of your counter or island.
- Kitchen counters and islands are usually about 35 to 37 inches high. You need counter height stools.
- Bars and pub tables are usually about 40 to 42 inches high. You need bar height stools.
- Standard dining tables are about 30 inches high. You need regular dining chairs.
Pick the Seat Height
Leave about 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter so there is room for your legs.
- Counter height stools: a seat height of about 24 to 27 inches.
- Bar height stools: a seat height of about 28 to 33 inches.
Always check the seat height on the product page, not the overall height, because the backrest makes the stool look taller than it is.
How Many Stools Fit?
Allow about 24 to 26 inches per stool, measured from the centre of one seat to the next. Wider stools, swivel stools and stools with arms need closer to 28 to 30 inches. Leave about 6 inches between stools and at least 12 inches at each end of the counter.
Example: a 72 inch island fits about three stools comfortably.
Backless, Low Back or Full Back?
- Backless stools tuck fully under the counter and keep the kitchen looking open.
- Low back stools give some support without blocking the view.
- Full back stools with arms are the most comfortable for long meals and homework.
Swivel stools make it easy to get in and out, and to turn toward the room for conversation.
Materials and Cleaning
Faux leather and performance fabric wipe clean easily, which makes a difference at the kitchen counter. Metal frames are sturdy and modern, while wood frames add warmth. Footrests are worth having on taller stools.
