A good recliner is the most comfortable seat in the house. Today you can choose between manual and power recliners, chairs and full reclining sofas, and styles that rock, swivel or sit close to the wall. This guide explains the differences so you can choose the right one. Browse our recliners.
Manual Recliners
A manual recliner uses a handle, a button or a push back motion to recline.
- No power outlet needed, so it can go anywhere in the room.
- Fewer parts, simple to use, and usually a lower price.
- Best for: anyone who wants classic comfort without electronics.
Power Recliners
A power recliner uses a motor and a button to recline smoothly to any position.
- Stop at any angle, from upright to fully reclined.
- Many include a power headrest, power lumbar support and USB charging ports.
- Easier to use for people with limited strength or mobility.
- Needs to be near an outlet. Some models offer an optional battery pack.
Power lift recliners go one step further and gently lift you to a standing position.
Rocker, Swivel and Wall Hugger Recliners
- Rocker recliners rock gently when upright, a favourite for nurseries.
- Swivel recliners turn to face the TV or the conversation.
- Wall hugger (zero wall) recliners slide forward as they recline, so they can sit just a few inches from the wall. A standard recliner usually needs about a foot or more of space behind it.
Check the clearance listed for each recliner, especially in smaller rooms.
Reclining Sofas and Loveseats
If more than one person wants to put their feet up, a reclining sofa or loveseat puts recliners into each end seat. Many include a drop-down table or a console with cup holders and storage between the seats. See our reclining sofas.
Fabric and Fit
Sit in the recliner before you buy. Your feet should rest flat on the floor when upright, and your head should be supported when reclined. Leather and faux leather are easy to clean. Chenille, corduroy and performance fabrics feel soft and warm.
FAQ
Is a power recliner worth it?
If you want to stop at any position, or if getting up and down is hard, a power recliner is worth it. If you want simple comfort and no cords, choose a manual recliner.
How much space does a recliner need behind it?
A standard recliner usually needs about a foot or more. A wall hugger recliner needs only a few inches.
Can a power recliner work without an outlet?
Some models work with an optional battery pack. Otherwise, place it near an outlet.
What is the difference between a rocker recliner and a regular recliner?
A rocker recliner rocks gently when it is upright. A regular recliner stays still until you recline it.
