A dining table is where meals, homework and holiday dinners happen, so the size matters more than almost anything else. Too small and the table feels crowded. Too large and there is no room to pull out a chair. Here is how to choose the right size for your space and your family. Browse our dining sets and dining tables.

Measure the Room First

Leave about 36 inches between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. That gives enough space to pull out a chair and sit down. If people need to walk behind seated guests, 42 to 48 inches is more comfortable.

A simple rule: take your room's length and width, subtract about 6 feet from each, and the result is roughly the largest table that fits.

Space Per Person

Plan for about 24 inches of table edge for each person, or about 30 inches if you want extra elbow room or use armchairs.

  • Seats 4: a round table of about 36 to 48 inches, or a rectangular table of about 48 to 60 inches.
  • Seats 6: a round table of about 54 to 60 inches, or a rectangular table of about 60 to 72 inches.
  • Seats 8: a rectangular table of about 84 to 96 inches.

An extension table with a leaf is a great choice if you host a few times a year. It stays compact every day and grows for holidays.

Round or Rectangular?

  • Round tables: easy conversation, no corners, and a better fit for square rooms and breakfast nooks.
  • Rectangular tables: the most seats for the space, and the classic choice for long dining rooms.
  • Oval tables: the seating of a rectangle with softer corners that are easier to walk around.

Benches and Counter Height Sets

A dining bench fits more people than chairs, especially kids, and slides under the table when not in use. Dining sets with a bench are a popular choice for busy families.

Counter height dining sets are taller, at about 36 inches, and pair with counter stools. They work well in open kitchens and smaller spaces. Find matching seating in dining chairs and bar and counter stools.

Choose Materials for Your Routine

Solid wood and wood veneer tops are warm and can be refinished. Sintered stone, marble look and glass tops resist heat and stains. For chairs, performance fabric and faux leather clean easily, which matters if you have young children.

FAQ

How big should a dining table be for 6 people?

A rectangular table of about 60 to 72 inches, or a round table of about 54 to 60 inches, seats six comfortably.

How much space do you need around a dining table?

Leave about 36 inches between the table and the wall, and 42 to 48 inches where people walk behind the chairs.

Is a round or rectangular table better for a small space?

A round table usually fits better in a small or square room because there are no corners to walk around.

Are dining benches comfortable?

Benches are great for kids and casual meals. For long dinners, mix a bench on one side with chairs on the other.
